GREGORY COATES and KI KI NEINABER - ART IN ACTION

I met Gregory Coates and his wife Ki Ki years ago when I had just opened up a small office in the Hamilton Business Center and helped found a company called BLURB MEDIA. Greg and I would bump into each other at a community gathering known as the CHEN ARTS GROUP and have long discussions after the meeting about the importance of Art in a city  and community. I learned he was a world renowned artist who actually has had drinks named after him in Europe, and his wife Ki Ki is a very well known art curator. We became good friends and we collaborated on some projects together. The most memorable one was when The Allentown Art Museum had a Black History exhibit and many of the surrounding families/residents could not afford the admission fee. (People may find this ludicrous but when you have to choose between rent and admission fees, we all know what wins out) Greg heard my story about it being a shame that the urban youth would not be exposed to art due to lack of funds (no one knew about free admission Sundays at this time) and he graciously came into my office space and set up a mini-art showing with pieces from his own private collection, which included art from Hip Hop icon Russell Simmon's older brother, Daniel Simmons Jr., who is an abstract expressionist painter, as well as other paintings from around the world. He even left one of his pieces that people loved. (It was dubbed, unofficially, the Tire) We presented the art at the grand opening of the BLURB MEDIA offices and it was phenomenal. Every day, people came and looked at the art and I can't help but think that their minds were expanded and thoughts evoked due to the generosity of Greg.

Join him today, Sunday from 1:30-3 pm at Allentown Art Museum for a meet and greet performance by visiting artist Miyuki Nishizawaand AU artists from Osaka, Japan, and check back for upcoming openings, workshops and exhibits during their three-week residency here in Allentown. And the following comments are WHY we should be afraid, be VERY afraid ......

Gary Strathearn, the city's finance director, said there had been little discussion about how to reopen the budget. The focus has been on the bigger picture — trying to negotiate an acceptable lease, he said.

Some discussions about the budget will depend on how much the city receives for the lease, Strathearn said. Mayor Ed Pawlowski said previously that he hoped to command $150 to $200 million, but the price will be determined in the bidding process.

"I'm a big believer in jinx," Strathearn said. "I don't want to jinx whatever number we get."

OR

Last year, city financial consultants briefed council on how the city planned to fill a potential $500 million gap created over the life of the lease. That plan included a $4.5 million royalty fee.

The city has not been ignoring the issue, Strathearn said. But plans are in pencil, not concrete, he said.

"Do you think we're sitting watching TV, watching Oprah?" Strathearn said.

Unsure why people tend to forget that less than 10 years ago, THIS man was rocking a KODAK 1 Step camera every weekend and taking $5.00 flicks from 10pm to 5am in the morning at "The DOWN LOW Nightclub".... I was barely visible, in the cut, and hoping/waiting for the next customer so I could make enough money to buy groceries and pay rent. This was before Prolifick Radio, before events like the LEHIGH VALLEY MUSIC AND FASHION EXPO, before FUZION 2012, before the BMW, before City Council candidcacy, before my daughter Tallis, before a business office, before ALFONSO TODD AND ASSOCIATES / PROLIFICK MEDIA, before professional clientele.... All I had was a KODAK 1 Step camera and a mind to work, a vision of success, and a passion to succeed. I have collaborated with many people over the years and whether the relationship that ended was good, bad, or ugly, I have to tell them right now, THANK -YOU. But, PEOPLE, make no mistake, we ALL are given the same 24 hours in a DAY and it is up to YOU in how you use it. I stand on alot of people's shoulders right now, and while it is appreciated, it is ultimately up to YOU and what YOU do with each OPPORTUNITY YOU are given. It is either taken advantage of or wasted. (I could easily STILL be the "picture man" if that's all I wanted) The point where YOU stand NOW is due to the choices YOU have made, no one else's. But tomorrow is ANOTHER day and another chance for you to move toward success and greatness. CARPE DIEM. GET INVOLVED. BE EMPOWERED.
